Woodside
The gravel garden behind Susie Nugent's own farmhouse at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills, metres from Bird in Hand, the winery she co-founded with her husband Andrew. The garden has been made from bare ground since 1996, when the Nugents bought what was then a dairy farm and cleared its pines. This Mediterranean zone sits directly behind the wisteria patio, its clipped grey and green mounds a mix of westringia, buxus and teucrium spheres over prostrate rosemary and lavender, under a crab apple in pale blossom.
The gravel itself is quartz shavings, her own answer to a reader who asked under the post. The post's second photograph looks down the adjoining crab apple walk, where a small pale sculpture of a girl by the artist Liz Williams stands at the end of the path. The garden is private, though Susie opens it for ticketed tours she leads herself and for the occasional open day.
