A three seater sofa with an oak frame, a high back and grey blue canvas cushions, standing on floorboards with two square cushions on the seat.

WITH POPCORN HI-BACK FEATHER SOFA / with canvas

ISANA built this three seater to order and delivered it into the snow country of inland Niigata, past snow walls still standing taller than a convenience store. It is the standard width of the model, 1.92 metres across, its cotton canvas in a colour the maker calls Rainy, its frame Hokkaido grown nara finished in clear oil; even the two square cushions carry named colours, Cloudy and Camel.

In the maker's telling the model began with a client who wanted to sit for two hours at a stretch, watching films side by side. The room is not the buyer's: the workshop photographs its furniture in this same space, and the picture went up in April 2023 as day 571 of a daily posting run.

ISANA is a furniture and textile workshop in Niigata City, Japan, begun in 2011 and run by Masayuki Nakagawa, who designs and makes the furniture and heads its DIY school, and Nagisa Nakagawa, who designs and dyes the textiles and keeps the cafe. The cafe and shop sit in the Nuttari Terrace shopping street in Chuo Ward; the factory and showroom are out in Akiha Ward.
