Wälderhaus Müller
Sibratsgfäll, Austria
A renovation of a Wälderhaus, the Bregenzerwald farmhouse type that puts dwelling and farm wing under one roof, in Sibratsgfäll in Vorarlberg, finished in 2024 for Roland Müller at 195 square metres. The original timber structure was kept as the backbone; the old lacquered windows gave way to traditional sliding sashes, and the old shingle facade to a new hand made round shingle skin in untreated timber. Inside there is coffered and white fir panelling, limestone bathrooms and a solid ash floor, the old threshing floor was kept in its structure and now serves as a multi purpose room, and a heat pump on borehole probes and a tiled stove heat the house.
The Wälder in the name are the people of the Bregenzerwald, not the forests. The practice writes its own name Guter-Plan, files the house as Haus M Sibratsgfäll, and the Vorarlberg timber building prize gave the project a recognition in 2025.
