VELUX LKR Innovation House

VELUX's new innovation centre in Østbirk, Denmark: three timber warehouse halls built in 1995 as an experiment in wood for Lars Kann-Rasmussen, son of the company's founder, converted between 2023 and 2025 into 14,000 square metres of offices, laboratories and workshops for about 500 product development staff. Two courtyards were cut out of the middle hall to bring daylight in, and planted. About 55 per cent of the material was kept, 4,576 tonnes of it, and more than 400 VELUX windows do about 95 per cent of the ventilation.
Praksis Arkitekter won the commission in a 2021 competition against four practices, and the building opened on 12 May 2025. The initials in the name are Kann-Rasmussen's. Horsens council's architecture prize for 2025 named it the best transformation.
