Peckham, London
A single storey extension on the garden side of a two storey Victorian terrace of yellow stock brick in Peckham, London, published in 2023. The addition is oak inside and out, chosen to weather: an oak boarded volume with a folded parapet holds an open kitchen and dining room, triple sliding doors in oak frames open the corner onto a timber deck, and a pergola of chunky oak beams roofs the narrow oak lined passage down the side of the house.
Inside, exposed oak rafters carry rooflights over the kitchen bench. The practice publishes the project as Upland Road, after its street.
SAM Architects is a Peckham practice formed in 2013 by Sandi Johnen and Melanie Schubert, who both studied architecture in Germany and Italy and have worked in London since 2000, at practices including David Chipperfield, Duggan Morris and Grimshaw.
