Tree Change House
Berry
The architect's own home: Brian Zulaikha and his partner, the artist Janet Laurence, made their tree change to Berry, beneath Woodhill Mountain on the New South Wales south coast, and reworked a 1980s homestead rather than replacing it. Its three existing masonry pavilions were kept and joined by a new central verandah that turns the traditional lean to inside out, lifting the eave rather than dropping it, for 315 square metres in all, finished in 2024 on two hectares of native garden left as it was.
Studio ZAWA publishes it under the short name Tree Change House, with Berry House on the same page. The Australian Institute of Architects' New South Wales Chapter commended it in 2026 for residential alterations and additions. Shoalhaven Constructions built it.
Studio ZAWA
Studio ZAWA is a Sydney practice founded by Brian Zulaikha and Colebee Wright, its nominated architect. Zulaikha also co-founded Tonkin Zulaikha Greer in 1987 and remains an executive director there.
