The Sixties House
Bardon, Brisbane
A renovation of the architect's own family home. Carmen Saide and her husband Rob bought the Bardon house ten years before The Design Files told its story in August 2024, and waited eight of those years before starting the work, which finished in 2023. The walls between kitchen, laundry and living came out to make one open plan space onto a north facing deck above a new pool, a stairwell now leads down from the living area to the old rumpus room, and the original sunken concrete bath was refinished in microcement.
The house was first designed by a local engineer whose name the story does not record, and the practice's page calls it a special mid century home, cherished in its neighbourhood and ready for an update to suit modern family life. The steel balustrade at the entry stair is custom work by Superior Weld, and Saide names the project The Sixties House.
Carmen + Co
Carmen + Co is Carmen Saide's architecture practice, run from a studio in Bardon, the same suburb as this house. The Design Files calls her the practice's principal architect, and its projects run from mid century renovations to new rural builds.
