The Photographer's Garden
West London
The garden photographer Alister Thorpe's own corner plot in West London, redesigned for him in 2023 by Stefano Marinaz as a walk through woodland: 220 square metres wrapped around the house on three sides, in the heavy shade of mature London plane trees, with one meandering slate chip path as the spine of the garden, linking its two seating areas. The planting is a mostly evergreen matrix of grasses and grass like plants over thousands of bulbs, made to mimic natural woodland.
In his journal the photographer writes about cobblestones scattered through the slate like fragments of an older landscape showing through. The picture is the red brick corner in spring, amelanchier in blossom above an edgeworthia flowering in a pot.
