The Lavendrye Barn
Viney Hill, Gloucestershire
A converted stone barn in the parterre garden in front of Hayes Manor, a timber framed Tudor manor house at Viney Hill in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, now a holiday cottage for two with hens ranging free through the grounds. The barn's own age is unknown; most of the manor and the buildings in its grounds date from the sixteenth century, with the remains of a much older medieval dwelling still visible in the walls. Right outside the door is a walled flower garden of foxgloves, roses and hollyhocks, and beyond it a meadow where wildflowers scatter as far as the eye can see.
The picture is a visiting photographer's summer memory, posted in January 2026: the barn under its creeper, the glazed door open, stone flags through daisies and long grass, three hens on the lawn and the manor's black and white gable behind. Nobody is credited for the garden, and the property publishes it under its own name, The Lavendrye Barn.
