The Halcyon Stay
California
The Halcyon Stay is a 325 square foot off-grid tiny home on wheels by Fritz Tiny Homes, built in the Alberta countryside and trucked to a remote mountain site in California, where the makers call this build the California Mountain Tiny Home. Halcyon Stay is one of the models in the makers' range, and this one was fitted out around one wish: "For this client, a full double-monitor desk was a top priority for his getaway home." Heather Fritz on how the desk was made to disappear: "We personalized a custom electric murphy bed. The bed transforms into a desk during the day to maximize space and utility." The exterior took a new colour with the look of corten steel and extra ember proofing for the fire season, the shower is walled in glass and windows, the stock sofa gained a white oak trundle bed beneath it, and a horizontal fireplace holds native rocks under mist lit by LEDs. The home was hauled the last stretch up the mountain by an off-road salvage crew.
The card is a still from the makers' own video of the home, looking down its length: a timber plank ceiling with downlights, an oak floor, the long oak desk with its two monitors and a white mesh office chair set against the flat oak face of the fold-down bed, a green sofa at the far end, plants on the shelves at the left, and through the big window at the end, sunlight and a hazy line of mountain ridges.
