Suffolk
A private garden around a modern house set inside an old walled garden in East Suffolk, in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hedging partitions it and meandering gravel paths link the spaces: a bold, minimal front of clipped beech cylinders and ornamental grasses, then a naturalistic gravel garden where the main seating is held among birches, dwarf pines, grasses and flowering perennials, then a wildflower meadow and a relaxed kitchen garden. The hard materials are held to clay pavers, gravel and timber to sit with both the old walls and the new house, and the old brick wall is left clear so the planting can frame and soften it.
The planting takes its cue from the reed beds of the nearby River Alde. In the picture, white stemmed birches, silver lamb's ear, yellow green Euphorbia schillingii, purple alliums and tall Stipa gigantea line the path, and a chair sits on clay pavers before the wall. Gardens Illustrated put the garden on its June 2024 cover with an eight page feature written by Chris Young, and it won the People's Choice Award at the Society of Garden and Landscape Designers' awards in 2025. Colm Joseph Gardens is a garden design studio near Cambridge founded by Colm Joseph, who retrained in 2017 after working as a management consultant and economist, studying at the London College of Garden Design at Kew, and who works across East Anglia, the South East, London and further afield.
