Spark Lodges at YDD Resort

Spark Lodges at YDD Resort is a set of four small three-storey lodges by the Shanghai studio EERI at a camping resort in Jinkeng Village, Liuyang, in Hunan, designed in mid 2023 and finished in March 2024. Liuyang is known worldwide for its fireworks industry, and the lodges' Chinese name, 烟花小屋, means fireworks lodges. The village, below the Lianyun Mountains, built its own tourism trade on summer river trekking, and the brief was to cut cost and build fast while still making a different kind of space. Each lodge is 76.3 square metres, turned to the views rather than the sun because it sits on the north side of the hill: the ground floor opens on three sides, the second floor, in the architects' words, "does not open to the rice fields straightforwardly, but implicitly directs the sight to the corner window and side window", and the loft above uses the full height. The roofs are capped in translucent polycarbonate that reads frosted white by day and glows like a lantern at night: "The translucent polycarbonate panels on the roof became the most eye-catching feature of the exterior." The rest is pine board, cold-formed steel, birch-veneer plywood and OSB, built for Liuyang Golden Tree Bay Camping.
The card is the architects' own photograph by Nantu of the main bedroom on the second floor, the first frame of the post it was seen through: birch plywood lines the walls, the platform bed on its drawers and the angled planes overhead, a green wall and sloping soffit with a black grille close the bedhead end, a tall slot of glazing rises beside the bed under the angled ceiling with a black swing-arm lamp reaching across it, and a low window with a blind at the foot of the bed looks into the trees, with sunlight laid across the plywood in a bright wedge.
EERI
EERI is an architecture studio in Shanghai working across architecture, interiors and landscape. On these lodges its chief designers were Hou Rui and Zhu Lijin, with Yang Yuwei as project architect and Huang Yingmao on the team.
