Malvern
An Edwardian cottage in a quiet cul-de-sac in Malvern, Melbourne, renovated with a rear addition, completed in 2022 for a young family. The original facade and ornate front rooms were kept under the heritage overlay, and the 250 square metre house grew through an addition the practice kept deliberately minimal to avoid the common box on the back: timber framed sliding doors open to a garden terrace bordered by a grey brick wall that continues inside, and an office and parents' retreat sit upstairs, away from the children's rooms below.
The addition is clad in silvertop ash, its warmth knocked back with a dusty lime finish, and the rear garden terrace, planted by KLP Garden Design, sits inside a veil of silvertop ash battens. The practice names the project Silvertop House, and Built by Luxe built it.
