Rhythm & Colour No. 12

Rhythm and Colour No. 12 is a big square painting by the Californian artist Angela Johal, acrylic polymer on canvas at 60 by 60 inches. Where two circles cross, the lens of overlap is painted as a third, mixed colour; her store calls the effect an illusion of transparency, because the paint itself is opaque.

She calls her paintings Chromesthetic Geometrics: each is painted to music, heard sound becoming colour on the canvas. The hard edges are real tape and template work, planned in paper studies, transferred to sanded canvas and laid in heavy body acrylics, and the canvases hang unframed by choice so the ground runs straight into the wall.

Angela Johal, born 1962, grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1960s and 70s, took her BFA in painting at San Jose State University in 1985, and paints full time in her Bay Area studio. She is represented by Slate Contemporary in Oakland and shows with galleries across the United States.
