Rhonda's Garden

Trentham

Rhonda's Garden at Trentham in central Victoria, designed by Tim Pilgrim around a contemporary new build on a quarter acre block, briefed to make a small garden feel larger and more secluded than it is, the path winding the length of the house and raised mounds through the border for height.

The planting is his naturalistic prairie style leaning on the nearby Wombat forest, switchgrass, miscanthus and feather reed grass with verbena and daisies, on a Tuscan topping path chosen to shrug off big rains and stand out against the house's dark cladding. The garden was made around 2020 for Rhonda Watson, whose brief asked for a small lawn for grandchildren, a vegetable patch and planting for pollinators and local wildlife, and it opened its gate for Open Gardens Victoria in April 2023. Martina Gemmola photographed the garden.
