Reforma Bernabéu
Chamartín, Madrid
Reforma Bernabéu is StudioMadera's conversion of a 38 square metre ground-floor former office in the Chamartín district of Madrid into a home, finished in 2026. The brief, in the studio's words: "El encargo planteaba crear una atmósfera serena, incorporar el máximo almacenamiento dentro de una superficie reducida y trabajar la iluminación como un elemento central del proyecto.", a serene atmosphere, the most storage a small floor area can hold, and light as the centre of the project. The flat became one continuous space with only the bathroom fully enclosed; a continuous oak unit separates, connects and defines the zones without partitioning, and a change of level lifts the bed onto a platform with two large drawers hidden beneath it and curtains to draw across. The old multi-paned window gave way to a single full-height timber pivot window with the desk beside it. Walls and ceilings are finished in clay and lime; the materials are clay, oak, stone, sisal and washi paper, and two made-to-measure wardrobes have sliding fronts of light oak and handmade rice paper, lit from inside: "Sus frentes correderos reinterpretan los paneles japoneses shōji mediante una ligera estructura de roble y papel de arroz, realizados artesanalmente para el proyecto.".
The card is the first frame of the studio's own post and the same photograph as one on its project page, by Carla Capdevila: the living end seen past the open oak shelving that divides the flat, the pale sofa sitting on the sisal-topped platform, the timber-lined window bay with the desk and a green chair, and a low white sideboard against the clay wall. The paper-fronted wardrobes are elsewhere in the flat; the pale ribbed strip at the left edge is a column radiator.
