Marblehead
The garden designer Adam Woodruff's own former garden at Marblehead, Massachusetts, above a working harbour: bought in 2011, planted from 2019, and designed in collaboration with the landscape architect Matthew Cunningham. The front suggests a woodland edge and the rear opens into a meadow, grasses and perennials in diagonal bands between reclaimed granite paths.
The dark bowl in the picture is a zinc planter about three feet across, turned into a reflecting pool with black pond dye. Woodruff calls the garden a laboratory for unrestrained experimentation, free of client constraints; by late 2025 he writes of it as his former garden.
