A round pale timber board with a carved mountain range along one edge and a white veined stone inset in the centre.

A set of cheese boards carved for the restaurant La Casserole in Strasbourg by the sculptors and cabinetmakers Benoît Vauthier and Manu Lerendu, posted in June 2023: pale timber boards with a mountain range sculpted along one edge and a panel of white veined stone let into the top, made in the pair's Vosges workshop for a table in the shadow of Strasbourg's cathedral. In their own words, as Ben&Manu: "Cheese boards developped for the restaurant @lacasserole67 👌 in Strasbourg, France." The idea is the one that runs through all their work, hand sculpted landscapes rising out of useful surfaces; nothing else is published about the boards, neither the timber nor the stone, and neither the makers' website nor the restaurant's shows them.

The card is the first of the post's four frames: the round board seen low and close on a white surface, the carved peaks running along its far edge in pale, straight grained timber and reflected upside down in the polished white stone let into the top, the rim of the board rounded off below.

Ben&Manu

Ben&Manu are Benoît Vauthier and Manu Lerendu, sculptors and cabinetmakers who met at the Institut Québécois d'Ébénisterie in Canada in 2012, returned to France in 2015 and have worked from La Petite-Raon in the Vosges since 2021, making, in their words, hand sculpted landscapes rise out of useful surfaces.
