A second concept device imagined with AI by An Improbable Future, an anonymous speculative design studio that explores, in its own words, the intersection of design and generative AI: a single image made, by the maker's own account of its method, in Midjourney, posted in November 2023 under the same one word caption as the first, Device, with no title, no client and nothing built. Sony's wordmark sits on it, but no source connects Sony to it; the studio says it creates conceptual objects and interfaces that might exist in the near future, and this is one of them. In the maker's words on the practice as a whole: "I see AI as becoming an incredible tool for stimulus and provocation, and a powerful complement to the design process."
The card is the post's single image: the off white unit face on against a pale ground, scuffed and yellowed as if long used, an antenna stub and two knobs on the grey band at the top beside the blue wordmark, a dark green screen of red and white readouts, a big round dial at the lower left, three coloured slider strips at the right, and rows of small buttons, switches and labels below; apart from the wordmark, every piece of lettering is garbled, the surest sign of a generated picture.
An Improbable Future
An Improbable Future is a speculative design studio that explores, in its own words, the intersection of design and generative AI, its Instagram given to industrial and transportation design of the future influenced by the past, designed by AI and curated by an owner who stays anonymous. Its black concept motorcycle and its first Sony-marked device are also in this library.
