Mossy Point House

Mossy Point, New South Wales

Mossy Point House is a new single-storey house at Mossy Point on the south coast of New South Wales, on Yuin Country, finished in 2022 by Edition Office on the site of a fibro shack, with views toward Broulee Bay. Its outside is cement sheet, chosen to echo the smooth silvery bark of the spotted gums around it and the shack it replaced, over parallel blockwork walls, and it was built to a modest budget. Inside the whole house is lined with plywood over spotted gum floors, and a void cut through the middle of the roofline makes a sheltered outdoor dining room: Edition Office says "This void within the heart of the home clearly divides the internal program between the social and private."

The house won the Australian Institute of Architects' 2023 New South Wales award for residential architecture, houses (new), whose jury described it receding into the landscape so that the gums and the bush around it take the eye, and a commendation in the 2023 Houses Awards for a new house under 200 square metres. The builder was Smith and Primmer of the south coast, who describe the finish as "barestone on the outside and a rich grained ply internally".
