Main Ridge House

Main Ridge House is a second home for longstanding Sydney clients of Porebski Architects, built in 2025 on their vineyard at Main Ridge on the Mornington Peninsula, on the footprint of the property's old three-bedroom house, which had to be demolished because of asbestos. The practice had already built the same clients a studio, a viewing platform and a pergola in timber at their other place at Portsea, and Alex Porebski says "timber was a must for them on this house": all of it, structure, lining and flooring, is local blackbutt.

The house is two raised pavilions, the front one holding bedrooms, bathrooms, a media room and a mudroom, and this one, facing the vines, holding the kitchen and living room, cantilevered over a bushfire wall so that it reads as floating. Its columns, beams and collar-tied rafters are left exposed under ship-lapped ceilings and walls, a choice Porebski made "to allow the volume of the roof to be used and create surprising spaces in a simple way", and the deck it is seen from is one of the verandahs the practice says draw from Australian vernacular architecture.

Porebski Architects

Porebski Architects is a Sydney architecture and interiors practice in Chippendale, established by Andre Porebski in 1972 and now led by its practice directors Alex Porebski and Victoria D'Alisa. Alex Porebski was the lead architect on Main Ridge House.
