Madrone Ridge
Healdsburg, California
A new house of 4,920 square feet among oaks and madrones above Dry Creek Valley at Healdsburg, in Sonoma County, California, completed in 2021 and built as a set of linked pavilions joined by walkways, the footprint split into smaller pieces to leave more room for the native habitat. The roofs are two gently sloping triangular planes that gather rain into central channels and pour it into basins of river rock, which stand dry through the summer as a reminder of the region's seasons.
Lutsko Associates' landscape ties the scattered pavilions back to the site with a strong central axis through the house towards the valley: a weathered steel wall guides the way in, past a water feature lined with irises, to the pool terrace. The materials are rustic and drawn from the surroundings, and the planting is meant to feel untamed and organic, with bursts of strong colour. The bench in the picture is a reclaimed section of timber held off the ground, in the practice's words a quiet moment of pause. The house won an American Institute of Architects Housing Award in 2024.
