Linearization 3
Linearization 3 is one of three small paintings in the 2021 Linearization series by Tyler Hobbs, graphite pencil and gouache on Stonehenge Pearl paper at 16 by 20 inches. It is not a print, however machine true the stripes run: the structure is drawn by a plotter from his algorithm, and the colour is laid in by hand.
All three works in the series come from the same core algorithm, each with its own approach to colour, exploring in his words the combination of algorithmic design, precise plotter drawings for structure, and the finesse of painting by hand.
Tyler Hobbs
Tyler Hobbs is a visual artist from Austin, Texas, working with algorithms, plotters and paint. He took a computer science degree at the University of Texas at Austin in 2010, made the Fidenza series for Art Blocks in 2021, and has shown solo at Pace Gallery in New York and UNIT in London.
