La Ventosa

Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles

La Ventosa, the windy place, is the 1890 house on a promontory above the Los Angeles basin in Lincoln Heights that the architect Patrick Bernatz Ward restored and extended for his own family, photographed here by Justin Chung for the French magazine MilK. The family bought it in 2013, began the work in earnest in 2021 and moved in about eighteen months later; the house is a pyramidal Victorian standing in an old garden of century-old olive, pepper and palm trees, and the work was finished in 2023. Bernatz Ward: "We were on the hunt for a project that was emblematic of an older California, with older gardens and proximity to walkable neighborhoods."

The new work adds bays and porches that reach into the garden, wraps the outside in weathered redwood louvres and uses transom windows, a nineteenth-century device for borrowing light, to tie the old house to its addition; the palette is lime-washed plaster, red gum eucalyptus, stained redwood and stainless steel. In this living room the long green seat under the bay window is a sofa he designed for the house.

Bernatz

Bernatz is the Los Angeles studio of Patrick Bernatz Ward, who finished his architectural education at the University of Southern California in 2009 and works across architecture, interior design, furniture and product design, with custom home building, restoration and small secondary dwellings among its work.
