Two grey handheld devices standing on orange fold out stands, one showing a camera lens and the other a dot matrix display reading FM 108.45.

L1

L1 is a phone concept that Carl Hauser designed for himself in 2022, modelled in Blender and Figma and never built: a handset with no feeds and no high resolution screen, only a one colour dot matrix display and physical controls, a touch surface down its left side, a dial on the right that changes its job when the phone is tilted, into an alarm clock or a radio, and a camera viewfinder built in. In his own words: "Technology can be less intrusive and fade into the background. This concept has no annoying feeds or a high resolution screen, instead it has a one color dot matrix and physical controls." He posted it in October 2022, numbered 170 in his own caption, and the card's post is Design Burger's repost thirteen months later.

The card is the first frame of that post: two of the grey handsets propped on their copper orange fold-out stands on a pale ground, the left one turned to show its camera lens, the right one facing out with its dotted speaker grille, the round dial and a dot matrix reading 7:05 and FM 108.45.

Carl Hauser

Carl Hauser is the working name of Sebastian Stapelfeldt, a designer from Germany based in Tokyo and Head of Design at Analogue, whose own site is, in his words, a playground for the things he explores outside that work.
