Kent
Kew, Melbourne
Kent is the extension of a Californian bungalow in Kew, in Melbourne, by Megowan Architectural, completed in 2023. The new work sits behind the heritage-protected front of the house and adds a kitchen, living and dining area, two bedrooms and an upstairs rumpus room, with a new main bedroom suite in the front of the old house. Linear cream bricks in a stacked bond run inside and out as a neutral backdrop, powdercoated metalwork in the joinery follows the brick setout, and crown-cut spotted gum veneer joinery is set against polished concrete floors and the brickwork. In the architect's words: "While the extension is designed to sit inconspicuously behind the heritage-protected facade, it completely transforms the internal layout and function of the once convoluted home."
The card shows the kitchen: spotted gum veneer fronts on the island, the run and the tall cupboards, white benchtops with a thin white shadow line, a long window over the sink onto the grey paling fence and the planting outside, and the cream brick showing behind the open shelves. Megowan's own words for the joinery: "The joinery in the extension is laid with rich crown-cut spotted gum veneers, intentionally contrasting with the polished concrete floors and expressed brickwork." Megowan Architectural is a Melbourne architecture, interiors and development practice started in 2013 by Christopher Megowan, its founder, director and lead architect, who had worked at practices in Los Angeles, London and Melbourne. It is based in Brighton East.
