Kakeshita House
Shizuoka, Japan
A single storey house in Shizuoka, Japan, split on purpose into two buildings, the traditional pairing of a main house and a detached annex, at the end of a battleaxe block in quiet countryside. The two volumes face each other under eaves cantilevered far out, and between them stands a specially chosen crape myrtle, the lit tree in this picture, so the tree and the deep eaves together cover the space in the middle.
The roofs take their cue from the Japanese houses nearby, combining a gable with a single slope, and are built with no ridge beam, the members meeting at the top with beams alone. The terrace matches the level and materials of the raised floor inside, and the practice's stated aim was to remove the idea that the garden is outside. The house appeared in the April 2025 issue of Jutakutokushu, a Japanese housing journal, in an issue on small and single storey houses.
