IZU house&salon

Izu, Japan

A dwelling and hair salon together in one building at Izu, in Shizuoka Prefecture. The site is about 800 square metres on high ground above the road, with a large cliff on its south side, and the rules that keep buildings clear of cliffs left only about 280 square metres usable. The building sits in the middle of that remainder.

The plan spreads outward under a gable roof, taking daylight from the south and opening north to the calm landscape beyond, all on a deliberately small budget.
