Ironbark House
Ulladulla, New South Wales
A house on a steep, bushfire-prone escarpment above the coast at Ulladulla, on Yuin Country in southern New South Wales, completed in 2025. Two barn-like volumes and a garage stand around a central gravel courtyard, and the bushfire setbacks, the required safe distances between building and bush, were embraced as the framework that positioned each one.
The skin is corrugated Zincalume steel, sitting on a plinth of sandstone dug from the site itself, with locally sourced spotted gum lining the deep openings. The slope puts the living floor up at tree canopy height, so from a seat or a bed the view is into the trees. As of August 2026 the house stands shortlisted in the Houses Awards, with the winners due in September.
