Hunt Club House
Portland, Oregon
A single storey house in a wooded clearing on the semi-rural edge of Portland, Oregon, built for a young family of four moving back from Los Angeles. The house is wrapped in vertical Douglas fir boards, chosen to match the firs that surround the site, and presents a modest face to the street while opening fully to the yard behind.
The plan is three zones in a C shape around a central courtyard: a private wing to the north, a work wing to the south, and a communal room between them beside an off-form concrete wall holding the fireplace. Nine metres of sliding glass open the living room to a dining terrace, and a separate guest unit sits back from the house to frame the yard. The landscape of hardy grasses and groundcover, by Portland designers Outdoor Scenery Design, was planted to restore the native ecosystem.
