Honeysuckle House
Shoreham, Victoria
Honeysuckle House is a new house at Shoreham on the Mornington Peninsula, named for the Honeysuckle surf break beside it. It shares its site with the former Buxton School Camp, a YMCA camp from around 1925 next to a bushland reserve, and its gabled roofs and weatherboards take their cue from the old camp buildings. The owners are locals who live here all year, so the three bedrooms sit in two wings, one for the parents and one for two adult children still at home that can be closed off later.
The wall is off form concrete and the timber inside and out is blackbutt, on a block with a BAL29 bushfire rating; the heater is by Philippe Cheminees. Jay Earles of Planned Living Architects: "I think the combination of materials works really well; there's a good mixture of bold materials and nice, warm softer materials," and the money went into the main living zone on purpose: "we felt we needed to concentrate our budget on the things that mattered the most." Outside, Plume Studio carried the same concrete and blackbutt into a garden of feather reed grass, Russian sage and crimson glory vine.
