Middle Park
An addition and renovation behind a retained Edwardian terrace in Middle Park, Melbourne, completed in 2025. The brief was a forever home built for ageing in place: a lift connects all three levels, the ground floor sits on one level with widened passages, and a first-floor guest suite can be converted into self-contained carer's quarters if it is ever needed.
To keep as much of the tight block as garden, the car stacker, laundry and water tanks went into a new basement, making room for a deep soil native garden and a central courtyard. The new work is raw concrete, timber and soft curves, and the room in this picture shows it plainly: a board-marked concrete roof with a rounded edge, round concrete columns, timber lined walls and a black fireplace hung from the slab.
Austin Maynard Architects
A Melbourne practice founded in 2002 by Andrew Maynard and renamed in 2016 to recognise director Mark Austin. It puts wellbeing, joy and optimism at the centre of its designs, an approach it calls the architecture of enthusiasm, and works across single homes, multi-residential, retail and commercial projects.
