Kyneton
Heath is the first stage of a garden that will run to two acres around an architectural house on a hundred acre property, on a granite hilltop at Kyneton in the Macedon Ranges of Victoria. Tim Pilgrim laid it out as a central courtyard with serpentine offshoots weaving around granite boulders of up to ten tonnes, from above, in his own words, "like a four-tentacle octopus".
The hard landscaping is spare, steel edging, cut basalt steps and Tuscan topping underfoot, and the planting does the work: billy buttons and Big Red kangaroo paw as features, ribbons of common tussock grass, and a native led palette toughened with plants from New Zealand, South Africa and the Mediterranean, chosen for the wind and for the heat the boulders hold. Macedon Ranges Garden Services built the landscape, and Carmen Bunting photographed it for The Design Files, which published the garden in March 2026.
Tim Pilgrim Gardens
Tim Pilgrim is a garden designer working from his studio in Central Victoria, formally trained in horticulture, with more than fifteen years in gardens including time at the Garden of St Erth, Sefton and Stonefields. His book Wild by Design won Illustrated Non-Fiction at the 2026 Indie Book Awards.
