Green House
Barcelona, Spain
A 150 square metre, two-storey house in Sants, Barcelona, renovated and extended, completed in 2024. The house had bedrooms upstairs, a kitchen and dining room downstairs, and no living room. Instead of extending into the small garden to add one, the architects moved the kitchen out into the garden, in a new gallery of timber and glass built like a greenhouse, freeing the inside for living and dining.
The new front is pulled back from the line of the old building, freeing the two original arches to become the way through to the new kitchen. Glass keeps daylight flowing into the rest of the ground floor, and the garden becomes another room of the house, for cooking, eating and sitting with friends under a dense ficus.
Anna & Eugeni Bach
A Finnish-Spanish architecture practice in Barcelona, founded in 1999 by Anna Bach and Eugeni Bach. The two work from the urban scale down to interiors and objects, alongside teaching and research, and directed the 15th Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism.
