A private garden in Gloucestershire around a low range of honey coloured stone under a stone slate roof, where the studio blends modern technique with the local building tradition: a finely crafted hard landscape laid over with deep, abundant borders of perennials and grasses, multi stemmed trees close to the house for height, framing and shade, and further out, large native trees planted as rides and avenues towards distant church spires and parkland, in the manner of the great eighteenth century country house landscapes.
The picture follows a path of pale sawn stone slabs between the beds, past a mound of lavender, purple heads of verbena, white spires of veronicastrum and the peeling bark of multi stemmed birches, to a wide glazed door in the stone wall. The studio publishes the garden as Gloucestershire Park; it labels all its projects by county and building type, so the property itself stays unnamed, and it has published no date, client or photographer for this one.
Marcus Barnett Studio
Marcus Barnett Studio is a landscape architecture practice established by Marcus Barnett in 2004, a studio of ten to twelve landscape architects and designers working from west London and a rural satellite studio in Overton, Hampshire, on gardens in Britain and overseas. Barnett came to garden design after seven years as an Army officer in the Scots Guards, training at the Inchbald School of Garden Design.
