Glint House
Preston, Melbourne
Glint House is a four-bedroom Edwardian house in Preston reworked in 2022: the lean-to at the back came off, a small addition went on, and the ground floor was re-planned around it. The house had come with what its architect calls "a questionable 1970s second storey"; the new work is downstairs and at the back, and this room is the new living area.
The window is why the job won an award: the old aluminium windows went, replaced by double-glazed timber ones, a fixed pane 3.5 by 2.5 metres flanked by tilt-and-turn windows, and the window maker's entry won the residential window or glass retrofit category at the 2025 AGWA National Awards. It looks over the pool, and the architect on what that does: "When the sun is shining, the ceiling of the living room lights up with the reflection of the sun on the pool, providing a lovely calming moving light show throughout the day." The bamboo outside is slender weavers bamboo, planted as a screen by garden designer Lori McNutt; the floor is recycled timber.
