Glenmorgan House

Melbourne

Glenmorgan House is the reworking of a timber Californian bungalow in Melbourne by Bryant Alsop Architects, completed in 2023 after a two-year job. The old house sat on roughly 420 square metres, faced south, and was dark and introspective. It was gutted and refurbished, and a new north-facing addition was built across the rear boundary, turning the house in on a central courtyard and a smaller deck. The client asked for flexibility and a single level, to keep costs down and ceilings high. Bryant Alsop's director Sarah Bryant told The Design Files that the "breezeway connects the old and new in the house, flooding the home with natural light, views and greenery", and the practice's own page says of the finishes: "A neutral palette is laden with texture, and creates interest while not being alienating."

The card shows the living room in the new addition, under its cathedral ceiling with exposed timber beams and a band of high-level glazing, looking across the courtyard to the retained weatherboard house. A tan leather armchair and a pale channel-tufted sofa sit either side of round low tables, and a red-leaved tree stands in the lawn outside. The interiors are by R&Co. Design Studio, the garden by Chlorophilia Landscapes and the styling by ARCH Melbourne; Dylan James took the photograph.
