Fisher & Paykel Toronto Experience Centre
Liberty Village, Toronto
This experience centre in Toronto is a 380 square metre showroom and events space that Omar Gandhi Architects made inside the 1898 Boiler House of the former Toronto Carpet Manufacturing Company in Liberty Village, finished in the winter of 2025. It is the first Canadian flagship of the appliance maker Fisher & Paykel, designed in partnership with the company's own design team and its brand partner Alt Group, and the main volume is divided into three kitchens, minimal, professional and contemporary, the last of which the architects call the Social Kitchen. Locally quarried stone and North American timber veneer are set against the retained steel and original brick. The Social Kitchen is the room on the card, in the architects' words: "Defined by a floating wood shroud over a stainless-steel island, it creates an intimate gathering space within the grand industrial volume." Omar Gandhi on the hanging box: "It creates a special intimate scale while also providing a view to the industrial context through the top", and on what the room is for: "a place to get together and talk about design and food".
The card is the first frame of the post it was seen through: the charred timber cube hangs over the kitchen, lined inside in white oak, with the long dark table by Christian Woo and its rows of Kastella chairs beneath it and the stainless steel Arclinea island alongside, a strip of window behind them framing the trees outside, and the red brick and black steel windows of the old boiler house at the left.
