Earthrise Studio

Hackney, London

Earthrise Studio is the live-work home of the filmmakers and climate activists Jack Harries and Alice Aedy and their media company Earthrise, a 101 square metre apartment inside a converted 1924 shoe factory in Hackney, east London, between London Fields and Victoria Park, retrofitted by Studio McW in 2021. The couple bought it through The Modern House in 2019 and the work took a year and a half; the brief, in Harries's words, was "a multidisciplinary space that could be a home, a place to entertain and a functioning film and photography studio".

The architects kept the big windows, the trusses, the suspended concrete slabs and beams and the pitched roof with its overhead glazing. Against them they set new work: custom oak joinery including this table, the shelving unit and floating shelves, a long cast concrete sideboard with oak cabinetry, a matching concrete island in the kitchen, clay walls in a matte finish, and a stair of reclaimed Georgian pine boards behind a black steel balustrade. Greg Walton and David McGahon, the studio's co-founders: "It was key for us to not only retain, but also celebrate the existing suspended slabs and concrete beams which tell the story of how the building was originally built". Aedy says the apartment "is a natural, flexible, and beautiful backdrop to our work and lives".
