Dromana
A coastal garden on the edge of a cliff above Port Phillip Bay at Dromana, on the Mornington Peninsula, on a site the practice calls one of the most challenging it has worked with for its ecology and its geology, in an area with a history of landslides. The answer was a sweeping timber boardwalk that follows the natural contours, so the owners can move through ground that was out of reach before, curving down to a viewing platform over the bay, with a planting of westringia, miscanthus and lavender giving form and structure among a soft mass of silver and green. The garden opened to visitors through Garden DesignFest in 2018, and the practice's post from June 2023 announces its rejuvenation with Botanic Horticulture over the following months.
Fields built the garden, and the house it belongs to is by Apple Architects with interiors by Christine Saunders. The practice publishes the garden simply as Dromana; The Design Files called it Dromana Coastal Garden and the builder files it as Dromana Drift.
Nathan Burkett Landscape Architecture
Nathan Burkett Landscape Architecture is a Hawthorn, Melbourne practice founded in 2003 by Nathan Burkett, a landscape architecture graduate of RMIT. It shares its address with the builder Fields and the garden care company Botanic Horticulture, which together carry this garden's construction and upkeep.
