Denison Rivulet

Denison Beach, Tasmania

This is one of three cabins from 2019: short stays for couples near the Douglas River at Denison Beach, inside the Denison Rivulet conservation area, and a built test for a larger accommodation development to come. The clients' whole brief was "no plaster, no plastic, no paint".

The design leans on the timber shack tradition of Tasmania's coastal towns: Victorian ash lines every wall, stair and piece of joinery inside, the Tasmanian oak cladding outside is oiled black and silver-grey, and brass sheet alternates between kitchen splashback and bathroom lining from cabin to cabin.

Taylor + Hinds Architects

Taylor + Hinds Architects is a Tasmanian practice formed by Poppy Taylor and Mat Hinds in 2013. Hinds's account of these cabins starts with the coastal shack: "Integral to the Tasmanian tradition of shack spaces is a looseness, but a high degree of purposefulness."
