Dawn
Dawn is an oil painting of a sleeping woman by the Russian painter Serge Marshennikov. The title is the one Christie's gave it when it sold in London in February 2012 for 23,750 pounds; his own caption for it is the single word 2011, the year on the back of the canvas.
It is oil on canvas, 85.7 by 90.2 centimetres, signed S. Marshen. at the lower left. The figure is partly nude, painted with the close, unidealised attention his galleries trace to his stated influences, Andrew Wyeth and Lucian Freud.
Serge Marshennikov
Serge Marshennikov was born in 1971 in Ufa, Bashkiria, finished Ufa Art College in 1995 and went on to the Repin Academy of Fine Art in St Petersburg, where he stayed for post graduate study. He lives and works in Russia and shows through galleries in the United States.
