Yackandandah
A single-storey house in Yackandandah, north-east Victoria, finished in 2020 on a sloping block behind the town's 1864 courthouse; the name covers both the neighbour and the plan, which twists around a central courtyard separating the shared rooms from the private ones. The courtyard was planted not by a landscape firm but by the client and her mother, with magnolias, maples, hellebores and a chamomile lawn set to change with every season.
One of the practice's founders, Chris Gilbert, led the job in the town he grew up in; he was born in the local hospital. The house is structural insulated panels clad in silvertop ash, with angled concrete blades propping verandahs that otherwise cantilever, and floor-to-ceiling timber-framed glass looking across the court to the hills. A Melbourne practice founded in 2012 by Josh FitzGerald, Chris Haddad and Chris Gilbert, now directed by FitzGerald, Haddad and Sophie Gandar. It designs buildings, landscapes, furniture and lighting, and runs Candour, a sister company for prefabricated architecture.
