Corner House
Flinders
A house in Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula by Archier, finished in 2020 for two clients retiring from careers in architecture. The site sits against a busy road, so the house turns its back on it: a dark fibre cement shell, striped like the board and batten of the local fishing cottages, wraps rooms that all face a big private courtyard laid out by Openwork, planted with a dogwood, a Chinese tallow and an Adriatic fig that shift colour through the seasons.
Inside, the living spaces occupy the four corners, joined by stepped walkways that double as galleries for the owners' art and books, climbing gently from a four-metre-high entry to the snugger kitchen, dining and living rooms at the back. In 2022 it took the Harold Desbrowe-Annear Award, the top prize for a new house in the Victorian Architecture Awards. Photographed by Rory Gardiner.

A Melbourne practice founded in 2012 by Josh FitzGerald, Chris Haddad and Chris Gilbert, now directed by FitzGerald, Haddad and Sophie Gandar. It designs buildings, landscapes, furniture and lighting, and runs Candour, a sister company for prefabricated architecture.
