Clifton House
North Bondi, Sydney
A new four-bedroom house in North Bondi, finished in 2023 and named after its client, a builder whose own firm built it. The site is heavily overlooked, so the rooms step and stagger to carve out private gardens, the garage roof carries 600 millimetres of soil so small trees can grow on it, and the street front has no fence, just heavy native planting around a mature paperbark.
Upstairs, sloping screens of translucent corrugated fibreglass cover little conservatory gardens that the bedrooms open onto, with steel mesh filling the end triangles so no balustrade is needed; the client calls the result otherworldly. The old bungalow that stood here was taken apart slowly, its bricks relaid as the new internal walls and its Oregon roof timbers remade into the kitchen island and every internal door. It took a NSW award from the Australian Institute of Architects in 2024 and Habitus House of the Year in 2025.
