CLAY PETAL CHAIR

The CLAY PETAL CHAIR is a made to order dining chair by the Niigata workshop ISANA, its rounded backrest meant, in the words of the maker, to feel like a petal formed in fine grained clay: free, smooth curves and a soft shape.

The build is Hokkaido grown nara, the Japanese oak, in a clear oil finish, brass fittings, chip urethane cushioning, and a seat in the workshop's own standard chair fabric in ivy green, the textile side of the house. Several backrest variations are offered under the one name, and the pair in this picture stand as the catalogue shape.

ISANA

ISANA is a furniture and textile workshop in Niigata City, Japan, begun in 2011 and run by Masayuki Nakagawa, who designs and makes the furniture and heads its DIY school, and Nagisa Nakagawa, who designs and dyes the textiles and keeps the cafe. The cafe and shop sit in the Nuttari Terrace shopping street in Chuo Ward; the factory and showroom are out in Akiha Ward.
