Casa na Mantiqueira
Serra da Mantiqueira, Brazil
A family retreat of 650 square metres in a valley of the Serra da Mantiqueira at 1,300 metres, near Sapucaí-Mirim in Minas Gerais. The brief splits into three single-storey buildings stepping into the slope at different levels; the social pavilion sits behind a run of thick whitewashed walls interleaved with sheets of glass, set to frame views and catch reflections that pull the surrounding green and sky inside.
At the highest point of the land stands the family matriarch's house, a square plan under a hipped roof of ceramic tiles: the archetypal rural house, revisited through local building knowledge with a contemporary eye.
AR Arquitetos
The São Paulo studio of Marina Acayaba, who worked with Aires Mateus in Lisbon and SANAA in Tokyo, and Juan Pablo Rosenberg. The name is the Portuguese word for air, and they describe their architecture as occupying space through movement.
