Camberwell House

Camberwell, Melbourne

Camberwell House is an addition to a mid-century house on an L-shaped block overlooking a park in Camberwell in Melbourne, finished in 2016 by AM Architecture for a large family. The old living rooms were upstairs, with the views but, as Andrew Mellios puts it, "in total detachment of the outdoor space". So the practice re-routed the entrance into a new split-level pavilion holding the kitchen and living areas, which joins the first floor to the garden and sorts the house into zones for children, parents and guests. The brief, in the practice's words, was "More space for a large family, better zoning, and importantly to create a better connection to the outdoors but not lose the stunning views of the neighbouring parkland."

The pavilion is 4.8 metres high, lined in Victorian ash under a timber canopy carried on timber posts, and the clinker brick of the original house was kept and brought inside to close its ends, the new brick recycled to match; the addition also holds a main bedroom suite, a basement cellar room, new outdoor entertaining areas and a pool. The fireplace is an Ergofocus, a suspended wood fireplace by Focus, hung from the ceiling so that it floats above the floor, and it swivels to face the sitting area, the deck or the dining table. Mellios says the project came together easily and, in his words, "I think we found some magic".
