Brunswick House
Brunswick
A single fronted Victorian cottage in Brunswick, Melbourne, renovated and extended to the rear on a block of about 155 square metres, finished in 2021. The client had lived there for a decade and wanted the garden kept, so the new plan sits on much the same footprint with a loft added above, and a new central courtyard separates the two original front rooms from the new spaces. Placement treated the extension as an exercise in joinery rather than one open room, under a sawtooth roof that pulls in northern light, in spotted gum, wet pressed Nubrik brick and tiled bench tops.
Inner North Carpentry built it, and the garden the client held onto, in the paved yard, is by Treespace and Growing Designs. The practice, which writes its own name simply as Placement, publishes the project as Brunswick House.
Placement
Placement is a Melbourne practice established in 2019 by three directors, Stephanie Kitingan, Jacqueline O'Brien and James Flaherty, working from Brunswick East across residential, retail, civic and educational projects.
