Brunswick Galley House

An alteration and addition to a bungalow in Brunswick, Melbourne. The three front rooms and the original entry were kept and restored, the back half came down, and the new work added a kitchen, dining room and laundry downstairs with two bedrooms and a bathroom above, plus new insulation and bike storage at the door. The clients had been living on a narrowboat in the UK, so Topology Studio put a galley kitchen at the centre of the house, with the front and rear entries both leading to it. The practice publishes the project as Brunswick Galley House.
The street front is the restored original; the taller pale form behind it on the left is the addition. Technique Construction Group built it, Lynda Gardener styled it and Miniscape Projects did the garden. The Australian Institute of Architects' Victorian Chapter gave the house a commendation for residential alterations and additions.
Topology Studio
A Melbourne practice in Albert Park founded in 2012 by directors Amy Hallett and Darren Kaye, working across houses, multi-residential, hospitality and public buildings. The designs are led by each site's physical landscape and its climate, joined to a robust, process-driven way of working.
